Plymouth to Banjul Rally

Rallylogos

Forget the Paris to Dakar, for a real challenge try the Plymouth to Banjul Rally. Conceived as the ultimate banger rally the rules are simple: buy a car for about £100 and then drive it from Plymouth to Banjul in The Gambia, West Africa, taking in France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco and Mauritania, via the Sahara desert, 3,500 miles as the crow flies.

The two participants Joanne Housden, great aunt Conor Sturt (who is affected with MLD) and her friend Dawn Davies are hoping to raise valuable funds for the Myelin Project.

In Joanne's words: "We signed up to the rally earlier this year and had to employ subtle bribery techniques to get in as it is massively oversubscribed. Our mechanical knowledge is limited to say the least, but as 2 working production managers in television we thought we would put our negotiating skills to the test. The Senegal border crossing will be our trickiest task but along with team effort from fellow rally goers and a sense of humour we'll get through somehow.

We are the proud owners of a Renault 21 4WD bought from a Hindu temple in South Wales - it made it all of 4 miles down the road before the exhaust fell off, and there is currently a team of mechanics working round the clock to prepare her for the journey.

The trip should take about 3 weeks (if all goes wellÉ)"

They departed on the 27th December (group 3) along with about 44 other cars. There are over 200 teams taking part in all, leaving on four different departure dates and this is the fourth year of the event. When we last heard they had reached Seville in Spain. To date, the desert duo of the 'Camel Dodgers' have raised over £1460 for vital research - let's help them continue in their successful endeavour!
