MAGGIE WRITES: I have recently been diagnosed with MS and wonder if you can give me any advice on diet? I do have a healthy diet and currently keeping to a low-fat one. What would you advise? I look forward to hearing from you. TMP RESPONSE: This is a very good question and one that many people are interested in. As a lay-person, I can say that a low fat diet is always a healthy choice but this should also be subsidised by nutritional supplements. I did attend a recent workshop that expressed the benefits of anti-oxidants and vitamin/mineral supplements when battling any disease. The anti-oxidants are known to help keep cells from breaking down and thus, help keep them becoming susceptible to attack/breakdown by disease. You can check with your dietician or GP for dosages and suggestions that may best suit you and your lifestyle. Also, if anyone else would like to share their thoughts on diet and supplements, please fill out the message board form. Thank you and all the best! Belle :)

LORRAINE ASKS: Are trials and research into drug treatments for MS still ongoing or have they taken a back seat to transplantation? I have just come off Avonex after one year due to intolerance and cannot see any alternative, any suggestions? TMP RESPONSE: TMP's main focus of research is in remyelination, although we do look at the gene therapy/immunology aspect as well. Because, as many of our families have already discovered, a drug treatment is, at best, only a temporary relief. We focus on the permanent breakthrough as our goal is to put ourselves out of business! We welcome those to share their experiences, but we do not recommend any particular drug therapy. |
